How We Got Started

Our founder, Karen Holman, is a community radio enthusiast and has been a radio deejay for ten years at KCSB-Santa Barbara, KEOL-LaGrande, and KBVR-Corvallis. After moving to Salem In 2001 and discovering that there was no community radio station, she monitored the activities of the FCC until the 2007 application window for new noncommercial radio stations was announced. When she discovered that the application had to be sponsored by a nonprofit organization, she and her friend Steve Koc investigated several groups and found that the Salem Folklore Community was a great fit.

SFC was very excited to become involved in this project, so everyone wins! Karen worked with radio engineers (Brown Broadcast Services, Portland) and a communications attorney (Michael Couzens, Oakland, CA) for over a year to prepare the application that was submitted to the FCC in October 2007. In January 2008 it was determined that SFC’s application was superior to the two other applicants but the case has not been settled yet.
